C
We once lived in an old and small house. One day, I found something under my bed. I picked it up and shouted, “Mom! I found gold!” When Mom saw it, she just said, “Carol, that’s insulation (隔热材料). Now put it back.”
I felt sad. I thought that we would be able to buy a bigger house with the gold. When I put the “gold” back, my hand touched an old book: Bartlett s Familiar Quotations (《巴特菜特常见语录》). I decided to see what was in this book.
On the top of each page was a word, such as “Peace” and “Hope”. I found there were many meanings for “Light” alone. I thought it just meant a lamp or daylight before. “Love” had so many pages, and I spent lots of time reading about it, because I never felt it. I found that Mr. Bartlett didn’t have all these feelings himself, either. He recorded the words from thousands of other people. I was happy to know that some people were not afraid to talk about how they felt. This book helped me realize that other people thought about lots of things. So I didn’t need to feel ashamed (羞愧的) if I thought about things a lot.
Over the years, I’ve kept the book. I have bought a few of the newer editions (版本), but the first one is special
— it has set me free. I think finding Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations under the bed was gold.

Ask:
I always get pushed around and feel like a waste of space. I don’t like communicating with others. I’m the quiet
friend and so my friends don’t like talking to me. When my best friend isn’t there, I just sit at my desk and look at the floor around the room. I’m not good enough for anyone. I just want to die. My parents think I’m fine, and I don’t want to worry them. But I started crying in class today and I’m just sick of (厌烦) this. What should I do?
Amy
Answer:
I was like you four years ago. I think we live in a world where we often compare ourselves with others. I think you should really look at yourself in the mirror and try praising (表扬) yourself. Even if you don’t believe it, just do it. It helped me to love myself more. I also want you to know that almost everyone experiences those feelings many times in their lives. Surprised? I hope not.
Many people think you are good enough. I am one of them. I am sure your parents, your friends, and other people feel the same. Go outside and try to hang out with people. Make small steps.
Lastly, talk with a psychiatrist (心理医生). And trust your psychiatrist. If you don’t trust him or her, then you
may get the wrong person. Find another one. Don’t give up.
I say these things because I was in your shoes once. I was ready to die. But years later, I’m here and talking to you about it. Don’t give up.
