C
Yangtze finless porpoises (江豚) are cute. Sadly, their number fell from about 2,700 in the early 1990s to 1,800 by 2006. This happened because more boats made their home noisy and dirty, said China Daily.
To save the river and the animals, the government has come up with some great ideas. One is the river and lake chief system (河、湖长制). Just like every school has a head teacher, now every river has a river chief. These chiefs need to look after rivers and lakes personally.
Ouyang Junnian is the river chief of Doutoutang Town in Hunan. He checks the river every day. He cleans waste water and protects river banks. He says people can't find illegal pollution here.
Since 2021, no one has been allowed to fish in the Yangtze River. This is important because too much fishing means less food for the Yangtze finless porpoises, and some are getting caught in nets.
The year of 2026 is also the 10th anniversary of the "Great Protection for the Yangtze River"(“长江大保护”10周年).Thanks to these actions, the number of Yangtze finless porpoises rose to1,426 in 2026 from 1,012 in 2017. Many other animals, like the Chinese sturgeon (中华鲟), are also coming back.
