第一单元 伟大的探索

Welcome to this lecture, everyone. Today we’re going to talk about the Chinese explorer Zhang Qian and the Silk Road.

Zhang Qian was a pioneer in setting up the Silk Road. He was an official in the Han Dynasty. At that time, China knew little about the lands in the far West. The emperor sent Zhang Qian to explore and open routes to the outside world. Zhang Qian travelled to many countries and made useful reports on the people and cultures there. His journeys helped lead to the development of the Silk Road.

The Silk Road got its name from the Chinese silk trade. It was started over 2,000 years ago. Although it was called a“road”, the Silk Road was actually many different routes, both on land and by sea. These routes spread from East, South and West Asia to North and North-East Africa as well as Europe. They allowed people to carry goods between countries, and helped spread knowledge and ideas across the world. The Silk Road was important in the development of countries such as China, India and Egypt.

Radio host: Our next caller is Tammy. Tammy, you’re on the air.

Tammy: I live near an underground station. This morning, the ground outside the station was clean. But in the afternoon, some people started giving out advertisements outside the station. Many people threw these advertisements on the ground. Now the road is full of litter. What can we do?

Radio host: Well, you can go out with your friends and help pick up the litter. You can also ask the workers at the underground station to put up a sign saying,“Do not litter.”

Tammy: Thanks. That sounds great.

Radio host: I’m glad to help. Now we have Louise. How can we help you, Louise?

Louise: My family has a lot of problems with noise pollution. First, our neighbour plays the drums and we cannot sleep at night! Next is the awful noise from cars. That goes on all day. Finally, next year, there’ll be a building site nearby. It’ll be noisy. What can we do?

Radio host: Well, when you have a noisy neighbour, you need to talk to the building manager. As for the cars and building site, you can contact the city government and see if that helps.

第四单元 自然灾害

Radio announcer: This is a government announcement. An asteroid will travel very close to the Earth. It is possible that it will hit the Earth. Please do not go outside.

Arthur: What are we going to do, Helen?

Helen: Oh, no! I’m only 14. I haven’t even started my life! Barry, I’m scared.

Barry: Helen, don’t cry. I’m sure everything will be OK.

Joseph: Well, I want to go home.

Arthur: No, Joseph. The government advised us not to go outside. We should stay here.

Joseph: I’m going to phone my mum and dad. If this is my last day on Earth, I want to say“thank you”to my parents for everything they’ve done for me. Arthur, is the phone working?

Arthur: Yes, it is. Go on and use it, Joseph. I’m going to prepare a disaster survival kit. What shall I put in my survival kit, Barry?

Barry: Food, water and some medicine.

Helen: I’m going to make a list of everything I want to do with my life if the asteroid doesn’t hit the Earth.

Barry: That’s a good idea, Helen. I’m going to think of all the good things in my life and write them down.

Radio announcer: This is a government announcement. The asteroid is moving away from the Earth. It will not hit the Earth!

B

Announcer: Now for the results of the matches. In the Boys’ semi-finals, Alex beat John by eleven nine in the first set, and by eleven eight in the second set. In the other semi-final, Mark beat Raymond by eleven three and eleven eight. Mark went on to beat Alex. He lost the first set by eight eleven, but won the next two sets by eleven three and eleven five.

第六单元 关心你的健康

Eye doctor: As an eye doctor, I often see students with poor eyesight or eye problems. They always ask me how to take care of their eyes. In fact, many eye problems can be avoided if you will only take some simple steps. For example, don’t spend too much time staring at your computer screen. It can hurt your eyes. When you’ve used your eyes for a long time, for example, working on the computer, watching TV or reading a book, you need to take a break. You need to relax your eyes and do eye exercises. Always make sure that you have enough light when you’re reading. At the same time, you should never look into a bright light, such as the sun. And, if you’re going to be out in the sun for a long time, you need to wear sunglasses. Now many students’ eyesight is damaged and some students even go blind because of accidents, so you should be careful when you’re doing science experiments. If harmful chemicals get into your eyes, be sure to wash your eyes gently with water. Finally, eating a lot of green vegetables can help protect your eyesight. One of the most valuable things you have is your eyesight, so start to protect your eyes now.(龙华家教真情为您服务)
