  For years,when people talked of aliens from space,they talked of “Martians”——creatures from the planet Mars.
   How did people get the ides that might be aliens on Mars?When you look at Mars through a telescope,it looks a lot like the Earth.Like the earth,ithas an atmosphere and it has seasons.It also has many dark areas.When people first looked at Mars through a telescope in the 1850s,they imagined that these dark areas were oceans of water,like the oceans we have on earth.So,since they thought that Mars had water ,they thought it possible that Mars also had life.
   Then in 1877,an Italian astronomer thought that he saw “Canals” on Mars.A canal can be any kind of river of water.However,the world most often means a man-made river.Many people thought that if there were canals on Mars,there must be people-like creatures there.The astronomer Percival Lowell helped make this ides popular.Lowell thought that Martian farmers used these canals for there fields.Most other astronomers could not see these “canals”when they looked through their telescopes.However,this ides captured people's attention,and many people thought that Mars must have aliens.
   We now know that the canals on Mars are not real.Mars has water,but this water is made of ice.Its atmosphere is also too thin to support most life.While there might be life on Mars,that life will not at all look like the alien creatures we usually think of when we talk of “Martians”.
